The subject is ever different from the object1 min read

Shri Shankara Acharya’s Vakyavritti Verse  15

The teacher said: ’’The seer of the pot is ever different from the pot, its object, and is never one with the pot. Similarly, the seer of the body is ever different from the body, its object. Therefore the truth is: I am not the body; this you must understand”.

Commentary .

Over two thousand years ago the Greek philosopher established that the subject is ever different from the object.

This rule has ever since been accepted by all thinking people. It is clear that the tree which I see is not myself; it is an object and I am the subject, being radically different from the other.

If this rule is not accepted, there is no place for logic and reason.

The holy Acharya begins the brilliant introduction to his commentary on the Brahma Sutras with this premise, and every student who bears it in mind will find Shri Shankara easy to follow.
