My mind had moved elsewhere but now is still1 min read

Shri Shankara Acharya’s Vakyavritti Verse  21

“‘My mind had moved elsewhere but now is still.’ He who thus knows the vritti of the mind – that am I. ‘ This you must understand”.

Commentary                                                                                                      ‘

Sometimes the mind is active, sometimes it is at peace; sometimes it is subject to excitement, anger, love or hate, and at other times it is peaceful like the blue sky in the contemplation of the One-without-a-second.

Who is it that cognizes both states of the mind?

Who is it that knows that the mind some time ago was active but now is peaceful? Do we not very often Say after a Holy meeting:” Oh, there was real peace in the meeting; I was so happy”?

What is that entity which cognizes both the active and the passive state of the mind? It is called Self (Atman).
