Sit down quietly, cast off all your worries, and if they still invade you—if you find that your mind is still troublesome and is not obedient—breathe deeply, consciously and rhythmically and if you can also put on your breath the Holy Name OM it will help you very much.
Then sit still. There is a great joy in being still. If you can teach yourself to sit still you have learnt a very great lesson.
Then meditate; that is to say, close your eyes, close your ears and close the other apertures of your external consciousness and take the following text.
Say it several times and when you have said it, think of the heart region and imagine that the text is written there.
This is the first step in the science of meditation and the text is pregnant with very great truth.
You may realize its meaning or not, but if you fill your mind with it, very good results will follow.
The text is:
I AM THY MASTER O MY MIND.
IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU SHOULD OBEY ME.
BE STILL. THY REAL HOME AND SUPPORT IS GOD WITHIN ME.
For a few days you will feel that your mind is active and you are getting nothing out of the meditation, but please continue it. There are many horses which cannot be broken in at once—it takes a long time even for a skilled horseman to break them in—and if you have a mind which is not easily broken in, I assure you it is a very good mind because it has a lot of energy in it, and the more energy the mind has, the more useful it will become.
The whole course of mental living is to direct the mind from its present course into right energy and right creativity.
